Reflections of Fear was one of the eight haunted houses that was featured during Halloween Horror Nights: Reflections of Fear. The house took place entirely in two different versions of Dr. Mary Agana's office. This house was located in the JAWS Queue.

History and Location[]

In 2008, Universal decided to tie in all eight of their haunted houses to patients of Bloody Mary. This haunted house would tie in to Bloody Mary herself.

The house would take place in her office in both the timeline of 1958 where she was still a doctor and the present timeline (or the mirror world) where Mary became a witch and the place became (seemingly) abandoned. It would also feature the various victims of Bloody Mary both past and present, and would show her death in 1958.

The house was located in the extended queue for the JAWS ride, making it the fifth haunted house in this location.

Description[]

"To Suffering there is a limit. To Fearing, none."

The only way for Dr. Mary Agana to face her deepest fear-death-is to watch the light of life leave your eyes as your soul leaves your body. (event map)

Noted psychiatrist Dr. Mary Agana believed that if a subject was constantly forced to experience what they feared the most, then over time they would become numb to the idea of actually fearing it. Unfortunately for us, Dr. Agana's fear is that of death, and only way to cure herself is to watch the light leave your eyes as your soul leaves your body. (website)

Mystery Tie-in[]

This Mystery Tie-In was not only for the house, but for the entire event itself.

Dr. Mary Agana was a psychiatrist who was doing dangerous “fear treatments” on patients in order to satiate her own fear of death.

These events got the attention of Boris Shuster, a private investigator, who became suspicious of Mary Agana's actions after his photographer, Charlie McPherson went missing. He booked an appointment with her, pretending to have a fear of doctors. In reality, he started investigating the office while she wasn't looking and soon found her notebooks and journal detailing her previous patients and their treatments, including his missing photographer as well as a woman he worked with previously who was suspicious her husband was being unfaithful.

He also began to notice something strange. Dr. Agana seemed to be getting younger every time he saw her, and also noticed she seemed to be talking to the mirror in her music box. Mary soon became aware of Boris' investigations and he ran for his life.

Realizing he was in over his head, he tried to arrest the doctor with the help of backup, but she had already disappeared. There were signs of a struggle as there were mirror shards and blood on the floor. It turned out a boxer and ex-con named David Gronell broke into the office and attacked her. Her body was never found.

In fact she died and was reborn as a witch who took control of the Mirror and became the famous urban legend of Bloody Mary.

Experience[]

Queue and Facade[]

Guests would enter the queue next to the entrance to the JAWS ride. The queue would loop around a few times before reaching the facade. The facade was the decaying exterior with a black sign reading Living Fearlessly: Specialized Treatments for Fear Based Ailments, Dr. Mary Agana, Phd, Est. 1958. Vandals had sprayed with red spray paint Bloody Mary on the wall next to the sign.

Haunted House[]

Guests entered the ransacked, abandoned office through the front door, coming into the long since unoccupied lobby. The room was completely dark, with little light due to the lack of power. Occasionally, Mary's face was seen flashing on a small mirror on the wall across from the door.

Guests suddenly found their path blocked by two massive inflatable walls, which they were forced to squeeze through. As the exited this obstacle, they found themselves in a cleaner, brighter version of the office from the 1950s. They passed through several rooms showing Mary and her deranged orderlies torturing and murdering victims, scratchy music playing through the speakers in a demented parody of a doctor's office along with distorted recordings from her journal entries.

As guests passed by an electric chair, they noticed that the man dying in the chair was an orderly, rather than a patient. Walking around the room, they found that the victim had escaped the chair and thrown the orderly into it, and was now in the process of using the shattered one-way mirror Mary had used for observation to stab her to death.

Entering another darkened hallway, guests found themselves back in the 2008 office building, passing through the rooms in reverse. Despite being in their dilapidated and abandoned state, Mary and her orderlies had escaped into the modern world and were now hidden in alcoves and rooms around the building.

In the final room, the office was split in half: on the left side was the 1958 office, and the right side the present day of the office. Both versions of Mary, Dr. Agana and Bloody Mary, stood on their respective side as the orderlies attacked guests.

Trivia[]

  • In Mary's office, a spilled bottle of Sleepwell is on Mary's desk.
  • Looking at the video, one can hear some distorted voices near the end. It’s a distorted audio track of Mary’s Journal Entry III linked here (https://www.horrornightnightmares.com/past-websites/2008/flash/journal_iii.swf). Also in the first scene of the house, played an excerpt of the first case file of when Mary was examining the severed head.
  • Old Smokey (an electric chair used in many houses such as Hellgate) was seen in this house.
  • This is the only time an event has shared its name with a house.
  • This house was an based on the Bloody Mary backstory as told on the website (though it didn’t at all replicate it), if you had never learned of Bloody Mary's story on the event's website, it definitely would caused a lot of confusion.
  • Mirror effects were used to create not only the story but also the scares.
  • One of the deranged orderlies had "Horny Devil" written as if it was carved on their forehead.
