People Under the Stairs: Under Construction was one of the many houses of Halloween Horror Nights 16. Located in Sprung Tent 2 it was a prequel to the movie "The People Under the Stairs". The story was, that a mansion was being built on an old graveyard, and the restless spirits attacked the construction site.

History and Location[]

For their 2006 event, Universal would decide to have all of their haunted houses (and scarezones) be sequels or prequels to landmark houses and scarezones in the past. One of these would be People Under the Stairs: Under Construction, a prequel to the People Under the Stairs haunted house. The house would be a spin-off, as it took place in the same world as the movie, but the story was made completely by Universal.

The house would mark the only return of the light helmets from the previous year's Terror Mines. The house was purposefully kept as dark as possible (although many guests reported being able to see fine in the house) with every twelfth guest being given a light helmet, The light would occasionally flicker and change colors for added effect.

To compensate for the increase in haunted houses since the last time Halloween Horror Nights was in the park, Universal built two hurricane-proof tents behind the World Expo area of the park specifically for holding Halloween Horror Nights haunted houses. This house would be located in the northernmost one (called Sprung Tent 2).

Description[]

Welcome to home-sweet-hell, a house so demented that even its incomplete walls bleed.

Can a home contain evil even before it's finished? With the only light coming from a source you possess, you will investigate the skeletal form of a home so demented that even it's incomplete walls bleed. Wipe your feet off before entering this home-sweet-hell.

Website[]

On the Halloween Horror Nights: Sweet 16 website, guests could enter the backstory page for the house by clicking on several bloody nails on its description page. There, guests would be in a dark room, using their mouse as a flashlight. On the page, visitors could click on and read an order form for various home-building tools, a notice of alleged safety or health hazards, and a notice of additions or corrections. Guests could also click on a telephone to hear a short audio clip, and a flashlight to hear a dog bark. The page also had pictures of the house, bloody nails, blueprints for the house, wire, and measuring sticks.

Queue and Facade[]

The queue entrance was located to the right of the Men in Black restrooms. It went down a road that led to the front of Sprung Tent 2 where it would then continuously loop around the side of the Men in Black building. Somewhere in the queue, every 12th guest would receive a light helmet. Eventually guests would reach the facade which was a wooden overhang with a blue tarp rolled over part of it. Guests entered the house by going under the overhang.

Haunted House[]

This house was the 2nd and final time that Universal used the mining helmets used the year before in Terror Mines. Allegedly, about every 12th person got them. However, the house was reportedly, too bright for the light helmets. There was a scareactor hiding under some stairs in one scene. Scenes in this house included, the table-saw room, the bathroom, the kitchen, the basement, and the finale. The captive children in the house had small flashlights that they would shine at guests. There was also a room where guests would be shot with a shotgun that would spray them with water. The shotgun spewed smoke and caused a shotgun sound effect to play, simulating an actual shotgun blast. Scareactors included the kids under the scares, Mommy, and Daddy. The finale had around ten scareactors, each with tools that made loud noises.

Trivia[]

  • This was the first house to be featured in Sprung Tent 2.
  • Reportedly, guests would leave the light helmets halfway through the house because the house was too well illuminated for them.
